***IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE FIRST BOOK IN THE SERIES, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS***
The Low Down: In the fourth installment of the Charley Davidson series, we find that Charley has been badly damaged by her experience with Reyes’ adoptive (abusive) father at the end of the previous book. Her home-remedy therapy consists of late-night purchases from the Buy From Home Channel, staying in her pjs and building a wall of boxes (courtesy of the Buy From Home Channel) around that part of her apartment where the assault took place. Because, if you don’t see it, it never happened, right?
Two months after the attack, Charley is still not talking to her father, she has moved her office into her home and she not left the premises. Her main company consists of her dead Aunt Lillian, ever-stalwart assistant/best friend, Cookie and her watch dog (also dead), Artemis. What finally pulls her out into the land of the living is a sighting. Of the Reyes Alexander Farrow type.
This volume brings a woman who needs to find out if she was crazy all those years and someone really isn’t trying to kill her. An arsonist starts to burn down empty buildings in Albuquerque, demons are starting to arrive and try to get to Charley, and Charley and Reyes finally acknowledge the crossroads. Where they are. Currently.
Best Thang ‘Bout It: Charley gets to finally be vulnerable in a way that doesn’t mar her tough-girl veneer; Reyes helps Charley to face her fears with his special brand of therapy; and we have another great mystery. Yum.
I’m Cranky Because: Who even freaking knows when the next volume comes out so we can see what happens with what happens at the end. Frustration city. July 9th?? What if the Mayans kill us all before then?
Should You?: Yes. This is a hot and heavy paranormal mystery series that hits all the right notes. Make sure you start at the beginning.
